José María Bocanegra

José María Bocanegra, born on May twenty-fifth, seventeen eighty-seven, was a prominent Mexican lawyer and statesman whose political career was marked by a brief yet significant tenure as interim president of Mexico in December eighteen twenty-nine. His presidency occurred during a tumultuous coup attempt against President Vicente Guerrero, showcasing the volatile nature of Mexican politics during that era.

Before ascending to the presidency, Bocanegra held various influential positions within the government. He served as the President of the Chamber of Deputies and represented the state of Zacatecas in the Chamber of Deputies. His legal and economic expertise contributed to his reputation as a capable leader in the political landscape of early nineteenth-century Mexico.

In a critical moment of national crisis, Bocanegra was appointed interim president by Congress while President Guerrero took command of his troops to confront the insurrection. However, his presidency was short-lived; just five days later, the rebels stormed the National Palace, leading to Bocanegra's overthrow. This event resulted in the establishment of an executive triumvirate led by Pedro Vélez, further illustrating the instability of the Mexican government during this period.
