José María Castro Madriz

José María Castro Madriz, born on September first, eighteen eighteen, was a prominent Costa Rican intellectual and statesman. His political career spanned over four decades, during which he held various significant offices, including the presidency of Costa Rica from eighteen forty-seven to eighteen forty-nine and again from eighteen sixty-six to eighteen sixty-eight. Notably, he became the first individual to preside over all three branches of the Costa Rican government.

A staunch liberal, Castro was deeply influenced by Enlightenment principles and championed freedom of the press. His commitment to social reform was evident in his advocacy for the abolition of the death penalty, antimilitarism, and the establishment of free compulsory education. Additionally, he was an active member of Freemasonry, reflecting his dedication to progressive ideals.

Despite his significant contributions, Castro's presidential terms were marred by military coups that prevented him from completing his mandates. During his first presidency, on August thirty-first, eighteen forty-eight, he declared Costa Rica a sovereign republic, effectively severing its ties with the now-defunct Federal Republic of Central America. Furthermore, he introduced the national tricolor flag, a design created by his wife, Pacífica Fernández, which remains a symbol of Costa Rican identity.
