José Napoleón Duarte, born on November twenty-third, nineteen twenty-five, was a prominent Salvadoran politician who played a significant role in the tumultuous history of El Salvador during the Salvadoran Civil War. He served as the thirty-sixth President of El Salvador from nineteen eighty-four to nineteen eighty-nine, a period marked by intense conflict and strife.
Before his presidency, Duarte was the mayor of San Salvador and made an unsuccessful bid for the presidency in nineteen seventy-two. This election is often regarded as fraudulent, reflecting the political instability of the time. Following a coup d'état in nineteen seventy-nine, he became a key figure in the civil-military Junta, leading it from nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-two.
In nineteen eighty-four, Duarte was elected president, defeating the leader of the ARENA party, Roberto D'Aubuisson. His administration received substantial support from the American Reagan Administration and the Central Intelligence Agency, which was crucial during the worst years of the Salvadoran Civil War. This era was characterized by severe human rights abuses and massacres perpetrated by Salvadoran security forces and associated death squads.
