José Policarpo

José da Cruz Policarpo, born on 26 February 1936, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, serving as a university teacher, priest, and ultimately as the Patriarch of Lisbon. His tenure as Patriarch began on 24 March 1998 and lasted until 18 May 2013, marking a significant period in the church's history.

Known affectionately as D. José Policarpo, he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001, a testament to his influence and dedication within the church. His academic pursuits led him to earn a doctorate in theology from the esteemed Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, further solidifying his role as a respected theologian.
