Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of José Ramos-Horta

José Ramos-Horta, born on December twenty-six, nineteen forty-nine, is a prominent East Timorese politician and legal expert. He has served as the seventh president of Timor-Leste since 2022, having previously held the office as the fourth president from two thousand seven to two thousand twelve. His dedication to peace and justice was recognized when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in nineteen ninety-six, sharing the honor with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo for their efforts towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in East Timor.

Ramos-Horta's political journey began as a founder and former member of Fretilin, where he became the exiled spokesman for the East Timorese resistance during the Indonesian occupation from nineteen seventy-five to nineteen ninety-nine. Although he continued to work with Fretilin, he chose to resign from the party in nineteen eighty-eight, transitioning into an independent political role.

Following East Timor's independence in two thousand two, he was appointed as the nation's first foreign minister, a position he held until his resignation on June twenty-five, two thousand six, amid political unrest. The very next day, he was appointed as acting prime minister by President Xanana Gusmão, and shortly thereafter, on July tenth, two thousand six, he was sworn in as the second prime minister of Timor-Leste. His presidency began in two thousand seven, but it was marred by an assassination attempt on February eleventh, two thousand eight, when he was shot.

After completing his presidential term in two thousand twelve, Ramos-Horta took on a significant role as the United Nations' Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau, starting on January second, two thousand thirteen. His political career came full circle when he was re-elected to the presidency in two thousand twenty-two, reaffirming his commitment to the future of Timor-Leste.
