José Sócrates

José Sócrates Carvalho Pinto de Sousa, born on 6 September 1957, is a prominent Portuguese politician who served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 12 March 2005 to 21 June 2011. His political journey began in the industrial city of Covilhã, where he joined the centre-left Socialist Party in 1981. Sócrates quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a member of parliament in 1987 and entering the government in 1995 as Secretary of State for Environment under António Guterres.

During his tenure, he held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Youth and Sports, where he played a crucial role in organizing Portugal's successful bid to host UEFA Euro 2004. His leadership of the Socialist Party began in 2004, leading to a historic absolute majority in the 2005 elections amidst an economic crisis characterized by stagnation and public finance challenges. His government implemented fiscal austerity and structural reforms, including significant changes to social security and labor laws.

Despite initial successes in reducing the budget deficit, Sócrates faced increasing challenges as the Great Recession impacted Portugal, leading to a loss of majority in the 2009 elections. His second term was marked by a deteriorating economic situation, culminating in a request for a bailout program in April 2011 after his austerity measures were rejected by Parliament. Following the snap elections in June 2011, he resigned as Secretary-General of the Socialist Party.

José Sócrates' political career has been marred by allegations of corruption, notably in the Independente University and Freeport cases. In November 2014, he became the first former Prime Minister in Portugal to be arrested on charges of corruption, tax evasion, and money laundering. After spending time in custody and under house arrest, he was released in October 2015, awaiting the conclusion of an extensive investigation that continued until his indictment in October 2017. In 2018, he distanced himself from the Socialist Party, marking a significant turn in his political narrative.
