Joseph Aoun, born on January tenth, nineteen sixty-four, is a prominent Lebanese politician and military officer who has made significant contributions to his country. He is currently serving as the fourteenth president of Lebanon, a position he has held since January twenty twenty-five. Aoun's military background is notable, as he is the fifth president of Lebanon to have served in the armed forces, having previously commanded the Lebanese Armed Forces.
Raised in a Maronite Christian family in the Beirut suburb of Sin el Fil, Aoun pursued higher education at the Lebanese American University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science alongside a degree in military science from the Lebanese Army Military Academy. His military career began in nineteen eighty-three when he joined the Lebanese Armed Forces, receiving training both in Syria and the United States, including specialized counter-terrorism training in two thousand eight and again in two thousand thirteen.
Aoun's military prowess was evident during his service in the Lebanese Commando Regiment, particularly during the War of Elimination in nineteen ninety, where he took command after the death of his unit's leader, Bassam Gergi. His leadership skills were further recognized when he was appointed commander of the ninth brigade stationed on the border with Israel in two thousand fifteen. In March two thousand seventeen, he ascended to the role of commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, succeeding Jean Kahwaji, and gained national acclaim for his effective strategies against terrorist groups such as Islamic State and Al-Nusra Front.
In the political arena, Aoun emerged as a key figure in the lead-up to the presidential elections, being consistently mentioned as a potential candidate to succeed President Michel Aoun. His election in January twenty twenty-five marked the conclusion of a prolonged political crisis in Lebanon, solidifying his status as a significant leader in the nation’s contemporary history.
