He has garnered acclaim for his solo work as well as his contributions to the bands Fistful of Mercy and RNDM. Arthur's reputation has been built over years of critically praised releases and relentless touring, with his live performances standing out for their innovative use of distortion and loop pedals. Concertgoers often receive recordings of his shows immediately after the performance, enhancing the unique experience he offers.

Discovered by the legendary Peter Gabriel in the mid-1990s, Arthur became the first North American artist to sign with Gabriel's Real World label. His debut album, Big City Secrets, was released in nineteen ninety-seven, followed by the critically acclaimed Come to Where I'm From in two thousand. After a series of releases with various independent labels from two thousand two to two thousand six, he established his own label, Lonely Astronaut Records, in two thousand six. Under this label, he released two studio albums, Let's Just Be in two thousand seven and Temporary People in two thousand eight, with his backing band, The Lonely Astronauts.

Returning to his roots as a solo artist, Arthur released The Graduation Ceremony in two thousand eleven and the ambitious double album, Redemption City, in two thousand twelve. In two thousand thirteen, he launched a Pledge Music campaign to fund his tenth studio album, The Ballad of Boogie Christ, which was released on June eleventh, two thousand thirteen.

In addition to his musical talents, Joseph Arthur is also an accomplished painter and designer. His artwork has been featured on all of his releases, and notably, the sleeve design for his extended play Vacancy was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package, showcasing his artistic versatility.
