Joseph Avenol, born on June ninth, eighteen seventy-nine, was a prominent French diplomat and politician whose career was marked by significant contributions to international diplomacy.
He is best known for his tenure as the second Secretary General of the League of Nations, a role he held from July third, nineteen thirty-three, until August thirty-first, nineteen forty. Avenol succeeded Sir Eric Drummond, the first Secretary General, who served from nineteen twenty to nineteen thirty-three.
During his leadership, Avenol faced numerous challenges as the League navigated the tumultuous political landscape of the pre-World War II era. His term ended with the appointment of Seán Lester, an Irish diplomat, who took over the position in nineteen forty and continued until the League's dissolution in nineteen forty-six.
