Joseph Charles Bonanno, born Giuseppe Carlo Bonanno on January 18, 1905, in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, emerged as a prominent figure in organized crime as the boss of the Bonanno crime family in New York City. His early life was marked by his family's involvement in criminal activities, and at the tender age of three, he emigrated to New York with them. After spending a decade in the United States, Bonanno returned to Italy, only to make his way back to America in nineteen twenty-four, stowing away on a Cuban fishing boat bound for Tampa, Florida.

Bonanno's rise to power was catalyzed by the Castellammarese War, which culminated in the assassination of rival Salvatore Maranzano in nineteen thirty-one. Seizing the opportunity, Bonanno reorganized Maranzano's crime family, establishing himself as the head of what would become known as the Bonanno family. At just twenty-six years old, he became one of the youngest crime family bosses in history.

In nineteen sixty-three, Bonanno conspired with Joseph Magliocco to eliminate several rivals within The Commission, the governing body of the American Mafia. However, the plot was exposed when Magliocco's hit man, Joseph Colombo, revealed the assassination plans to the intended targets. This led to Magliocco's forced retirement and Bonanno's hasty retreat to Canada.
