His acclaimed novel, Three Day Road, delves into the experiences of two Cree soldiers in the Canadian military during World War I. This poignant narrative draws inspiration from the legendary Ojibwa sniper, Francis Pegahmagabow, highlighting the complexities of war and identity.

Following the success of his debut, Boyden continued to weave intricate tales with his second novel, Through Black Spruce. This work follows the journey of Will, the son of a character from Three Day Road, further expanding on the themes of family and heritage.
