Joseph Brant

Joseph Brant, born in 1742, was a prominent Mohawk military and political leader whose influence extended across present-day New York and later into Brantford, Ontario. He is best remembered for his close association with Great Britain during and after the American Revolution, making him one of the most recognized Indigenous figures of his time. Brant's connections allowed him to engage with significant historical figures, including United States President George Washington and King George III of Great Britain.

Although he did not inherit a leadership position within the Iroquois Confederacy, Brant's rise to prominence was fueled by his education, skills, and relationships with British officials. His sister, Molly Brant, was married to Sir William Johnson, the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Province of New York, which further solidified his standing. During the American Revolutionary War, he commanded a group known as Brant's Volunteers, comprising Mohawk and colonial Loyalists, as they fought against the American rebels in a fierce partisan conflict on the New York frontier.
