Joseph Caron

Joseph Caron, a distinguished Canadian diplomat, was born in the small francophone village of Pain Court, Ontario, in nineteen forty-seven. He pursued his education at the University of Ottawa, earning a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Political Science in nineteen seventy. Caron began his illustrious career in the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service in nineteen seventy-two, with early postings in Saigon, Vietnam, and Ankara, Turkey.

In nineteen seventy-five, Caron embarked on Japanese language studies, which paved the way for his significant roles at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, where he served three times, including as minister and head of chancery. Throughout the eighties, he engaged in private-sector assignments across China, Hong Kong, Korea, and Taiwan, while also holding various positions in Ottawa related to Asian and international economic affairs, including G7 summitry.

His career advanced in nineteen ninety-eight when he became the Assistant Deputy Minister for Asia Pacific and Africa at the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, serving as Canada's senior official for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. Caron held the position of Canada's ambassador to China from two thousand one to two thousand five, with concurrent accreditation to North Korea and Mongolia, before becoming ambassador to Japan until late two thousand eight. He was then appointed High Commissioner to India, with concurrent roles as Ambassador to Nepal and Bhutan.

In recognition of his contributions, Caron received an honorary doctorate from Meiji Gakuin University in two thousand eight. He is married to Kumru Caron, and together they have three children. In June two thousand ten, he was appointed Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and later joined the Institute of Asian Research at The University of British Columbia as an Honorary Professor. Additionally, on October twelfth, two thousand ten, he joined the Board of Directors of Manulife Financial in Toronto.
