Joseph Genesius

Joseph Genesius, an enigmatic historian of Armenian descent, is best known for his significant contribution to Byzantine literature through his chronicle, On the Reign of the Emperors. Active during the tenth century, he is often associated with the court of Emperor Constantine VII, where he meticulously documented the historical events of his time.

His chronicle, which spans from the year eight hundred fourteen to eight hundred eighty-six, provides a detailed account of the reigns of four emperors, beginning with Leo V and concluding with Michael III. Notably, it also includes a brief overview of Basil I's reign, showcasing Genesius's ability to weave together the narratives of these pivotal figures in Byzantine history.

While Genesius's work is primarily viewed through the lens of the Macedonian dynasty, it is distinguished by a more balanced perspective compared to other contemporary chronicles, such as Theophanes Continuatus. His writing draws upon various sources, including Constantine VII's Life of Basil, and offers unique insights that are absent in both Continuatus and Skylitzes.

Though the exact details of his life remain shrouded in mystery, Joseph Genesius is traditionally thought to be the son or grandson of Constantine Maniakes.
