Joseph Gurney Cannon

Joseph Gurney Cannon, born on May seventh, eighteen thirty-six, was a prominent American politician and lawyer hailing from Illinois. His political career spanned an impressive fifty years, during which he served in the United States House of Representatives for twenty-three non-consecutive terms from eighteen seventy-three to nineteen twenty-three. Upon his retirement, he held the distinction of being the longest-serving member of Congress in history.

From nineteen hundred and three to nineteen eleven, Cannon held the esteemed position of Speaker of the House, where he became one of the most influential speakers in the annals of United States history. His tenure coincided with the presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, during which he often found himself at odds with the progressive policies championed by Roosevelt and later sidelined by Taft.

A significant turning point in Cannon's career came with a revolt against his authority, led by George W. Norris. This uprising was a key factor in the Republican Party's split during the elections of nineteen ten and nineteen twelve, ultimately leading to substantial reforms in the House rules.

In recognition of his contributions, the Cannon House Office Building, the oldest congressional office building, was named in his honor in nineteen sixty-two, solidifying his legacy in American political history.
