Joseph Heath

Joseph Heath, born in nineteen sixty-seven, is a prominent Canadian philosopher and university teacher, currently serving as a professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto. He has previously held the position of director at the Centre for Ethics and is also an educator at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Heath's academic pursuits are deeply rooted in critical social theory, particularly influenced by the Frankfurt School.

Heath's intellectual contributions span a variety of fields, including political philosophy, business ethics, rational choice theory, action theory, and critical theory. He is well-known for his bestselling book, The Rebel Sell, coauthored with Andrew Potter, as well as his popular work Enlightenment 2.0, which earned him the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing in two thousand fourteen.

Heath's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University, where he studied under notable figures such as Charles Taylor. He furthered his studies at Northwestern University, obtaining both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in nineteen ninety-five, under the mentorship of Thomas A. McCarthy and Jürgen Habermas.

In recognition of his contributions to philosophy, Heath was awarded the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellowship in two thousand twelve and was named a member of the Royal Society of Canada in two thousand thirteen. His recent work includes an op-ed published in the Globe and Mail in two thousand twenty-one, where he critiqued the use of the acronym BIPOC in Canada, proposing instead the term FIVM for 'Francophone, Indigenous, and Visible Minority'.
