Joseph I of Portugal

Joseph I of Portugal, known as the Reformer, was born on June sixth, seventeen fourteen, and ascended to the throne on July thirty-first, seventeen fifty. His reign, which lasted until his death in seventeen seventy-seven, was marked by significant modernization efforts in Portuguese society, largely driven by his chief minister, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the 1st Marquis of Pombal.

The third child and second son of King John V, Joseph became the heir to the throne at a young age following the death of his older brother, Pedro, Prince of Brazil. In seventeen twenty-nine, he married Infanta Mariana Victoria, the eldest daughter of Philip V of Spain, and together they had four daughters: Maria, Mariana, Doroteia, and Benedita.

Joseph's reign was not without its challenges. The devastating Lisbon earthquake of seventeen fifty-five and a subsequent Spanish-French invasion in seventeen sixty-two tested his leadership. The earthquake, in particular, had a profound impact on Joseph, leading him to develop claustrophobia and prompting him to refuse to live in walled buildings thereafter. He relocated his court to a series of tents, and although a new palace was commissioned in Lisbon, it remained incomplete at the time of his death.

Despite the difficulties he faced, Joseph I's era is remembered for its strides towards modernization, as the Marquis of Pombal implemented new laws and reforms that reshaped the Portuguese economy and society. Upon his death in seventeen seventy-seven, Joseph was succeeded by his eldest daughter, Queen Dona Maria I.
