Joseph-Louis Lagrange

Joseph-Louis Lagrange, originally named Giuseppe Luigi Lagrangia, was born on January twenty-fifth, seventeen thirty-six, in Italy. He later became a naturalized French citizen and emerged as a prominent figure in mathematics, physics, and astronomy. His work significantly advanced the fields of analysis, number theory, and both classical and celestial mechanics.

In seventeen sixty-six, Lagrange succeeded the renowned mathematician Leonhard Euler as the director of mathematics at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. His tenure there lasted over twenty years, during which he produced numerous volumes of work and garnered several prestigious prizes from the French Academy of Sciences. His seminal treatise, Mécanique analytique, published in seventeen eighty-eight, provided a comprehensive examination of classical mechanics, laying the groundwork for the evolution of mathematical physics in the nineteenth century.

At the age of fifty-one, Lagrange relocated to Paris in seventeen eighty-seven, where he became a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He played a crucial role in the decimalization process during the French Revolution and was appointed the first professor of analysis at the École Polytechnique upon its establishment in seventeen ninety-four. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Bureau des Longitudes and served as a Senator starting in seventeen ninety-nine.
