Josh Shapiro, born on June 20, 1973, in Kansas City, Missouri, is a prominent American politician and lawyer currently serving as the 48th governor of Pennsylvania since 2023. Raised in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Shapiro's journey in public service began with his election to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2004, where he represented the 153rd district until 2012.
Shapiro's political career advanced as he was elected to the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners in 2011, marking a significant shift in local governance as it was the first time Republicans lost control of the county. He served on the board until 2017, holding the position of chairman and also taking on the role of chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, appointed by Governor Tom Wolf in 2015.
In 2016, Shapiro was elected as Pennsylvania's attorney general, defeating Republican John Rafferty Jr. He was reelected in 2020, during which he made headlines for releasing a statewide grand jury report on the abuse of children by Catholic priests and negotiating a landmark one billion dollar settlement for Pennsylvania as part of a national opioid crisis resolution.
Shapiro's political ascent culminated in the 2022 gubernatorial election, where he ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and won decisively against Republican nominee Doug Mastriano. His leadership was tested when, on April 13, 2025, he and his family survived an arson attack at the governor's mansion shortly after celebrating Passover.
