Joshua Nkomo

Joshua Nkomo, born on June nineteenth, nineteen seventeen, was a prominent Zimbabwean revolutionary and socialist politician. He served as the Vice-President of Zimbabwe from nineteen ninety until his passing in nineteen ninety-nine. Nkomo was the founder and leader of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU), a position he held from nineteen sixty-one until the merger with Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) in nineteen eighty-seven, following a brutal military crackdown known as Gukurahundi that primarily targeted ethnic Ndebele ZAPU supporters.

A notable figure in the trade union movement, Nkomo rose to prominence as the president of the banned National Democratic Party. His political activism led to his imprisonment for ten years by Rhodesia's white minority government. After his release in nineteen seventy-four, he played a crucial role in the eventual downfall of that regime, alongside the splinter group ZANU, which was established in nineteen sixty-three.

In nineteen eighty-three, amid fears for his safety during the early stages of Gukurahundi, Nkomo sought refuge outside the country. However, in a controversial move in nineteen eighty-seven, he signed the Unity Accord, which facilitated the merger of ZAPU with ZANU to halt the ongoing genocide.

Nkomo was affectionately known by several nicknames, including Umafukufuku in Ndebele, 'Father Zimbabwe' in English, and Chibwechitedza, meaning 'the slippery rock' in Shona. His legacy as a leader and advocate for the rights of his people remains significant in Zimbabwe's history.
