Joy Davidman

Joy Davidman, born on April eighteenth, nineteen fifteen, was an American poet and writer whose talents emerged early in life. A child prodigy, she earned a master's degree in English literature from Columbia University at the young age of twenty in nineteen thirty-five. Her literary prowess was recognized when she won the prestigious Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition in nineteen thirty-eight for her book of poems, Letter to a Comrade, followed by the Russell Loines Award for Poetry in nineteen thirty-nine.

In nineteen forty-two, Davidman married William Lindsay Gresham, the father of her two sons, after a period of atheism and membership in the American Communist Party. However, her marriage faced challenges, leading to a divorce after her conversion to Christianity. Seeking a new life, she relocated to England with her sons in nineteen fifty-six.

Davidman's most notable work, Smoke on the Mountain: An Interpretation of the Ten Commandments, was published in nineteen fifty-four, featuring a preface by the influential writer C. S. Lewis. Their relationship blossomed, and Lewis became her second husband, profoundly impacting her life and work. Davidman passed away from metastatic carcinoma in nineteen sixty, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate.

The poignant relationship between Davidman and Lewis has inspired various adaptations, including a BBC television film, a stage play, and the cinema film Shadowlands. Following her death, Lewis expressed his grief in A Grief Observed, published under a pseudonym in nineteen sixty-one, revealing his deep sorrow and spiritual questioning.
