Joyce Kilmer

Joyce Kilmer, born on December sixth, eighteen eighty-six, was an American writer and poet whose legacy is largely defined by his beloved poem "Trees," published in nineteen thirteen. This poem, featured in the collection Trees and Other Poems released in nineteen fourteen, encapsulates Kilmer's deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world and his Catholic faith.

In addition to his poetic endeavors, Kilmer was a multifaceted individual, engaging in journalism, literary criticism, lecturing, and editing. By the time he was deployed to Europe during World War I, he had established himself as the leading American Catholic poet and lecturer of his generation, often compared to notable British figures such as G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc.

Enlisting in the New York National Guard, Kilmer served with the 69th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Fighting 69th," and was sent to France in nineteen seventeen. Tragically, he lost his life at the age of thirty-one, struck down by a sniper's bullet during the Second Battle of the Marne in nineteen eighteen.

Throughout his life, Kilmer was married to Aline Murray, a talented poet and author in her own right, and together they raised five children. While many of his works have faded into obscurity, a select few continue to resonate, frequently appearing in anthologies. Despite facing criticism for their simplicity and sentimentality, Kilmer's poems, particularly "Trees," have inspired parodies and imitations, showcasing his enduring influence on American poetry.
