Józef Czapski

Józef Czapski, born on April third, nineteen ninety-six, was a distinguished Polish painter, writer, literary critic, essayist, and draftsperson. His artistic journey was significantly shaped by his involvement in the Kapist movement, a group that drew inspiration from the works of Cézanne, marking him as a notable figure in the Polish art scene.

During the tumultuous times of World War II, Czapski served as a Major in the Polish Army reserves. Following the Polish Defensive War, he was captured by Soviet forces and became one of the few officers to survive the infamous Katyn massacre of nineteen forty. His resilience and commitment to his country led him to become an official envoy of the Polish government, tasked with the critical mission of locating missing Polish officers in Russia after the Sikorski-Mayski Agreement.

After the war, Czapski found himself in exile in the Paris suburb of Maisons-Laffitte. It was here that he played a pivotal role in founding Kultura, a monthly journal that emerged as one of the most influential Polish cultural publications of the twentieth century. His contributions to literature and art continued to resonate, reflecting his deep commitment to Polish culture and identity.
