According to both oral and written accounts, including the Huei tlamahuiçoltica, Juan Diego's encounters with the Virgin Mary culminated in the miraculous image that is said to have been imprinted on his tilma, or cloak. This image serves as a powerful symbol of faith and authenticity, drawing millions of pilgrims to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which has become one of the world's foremost Christian pilgrimage sites.

Juan Diego holds the distinction of being the first indigenous American to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. His beatification occurred in nineteen ninety, followed by his canonization in two thousand two, both presided over by Pope John Paul II in Mexico City.
