Juan Luis Sanfuentes, born on December twenty-seventh, eighteen fifty-eight, was a prominent Chilean politician and lawyer who served as the President of Chile from nineteen fifteen to nineteen twenty. He was the son of the esteemed writer and politician Salvador Sanfuentes Torres and Matilde Andonaegui. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his older brother, Enrique Salvador Sanfuentes, and pursued a legal education at the University of Chile, where he earned his Doctor of Law in eighteen seventy-nine.
In eighteen eighty-five, Sanfuentes married Ana Echazarreta, with whom he had five children. His political career began to flourish when he was appointed Minister of Finance under President Federico Errázuriz Echaurren in nineteen oh one. He later held the position of President of the Senate of Chile from nineteen oh six to nineteen oh nine, establishing himself as a key figure in the political landscape of the time.
The presidential election of nineteen fifteen was marked by intense rivalry, with Sanfuentes representing a coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Conservative Party. He narrowly defeated his opponent, Javier Ángel Figueroa, by a single vote amidst allegations of electoral fraud. Following his election, Sanfuentes navigated Chile through World War I, maintaining the country's neutrality despite external pressures, which led to significant growth in domestic industry during the conflict.
However, the end of the war brought about a crisis in the nitrate industry, resulting in widespread social unrest. Sanfuentes' firm stance against striking coal miners and trade unionists during his final year in office contributed to the rise of his liberal reformer successor. After completing his term, he chose to retire from public life, dedicating his time to family and enjoying the tranquility of his estate, Camarico, near Talca.
