Juan Manuel

Juan Manuel, born on May fifth, one thousand two hundred eighty-two, was a prominent Spanish medieval writer and politician. As the nephew of Alfonso X of Castile and the son of Manuel of Castile and Beatrice of Savoy, he inherited the significant Lordship of Villena, which granted him the titles of Lord, Duke, and ultimately Prince of Villena. His marriages, three in total, were strategically chosen for political and economic advantages, reflecting his keen understanding of the power dynamics of his time.

Throughout his life, Juan Manuel amassed considerable wealth, becoming one of the richest and most influential figures of his era. He even went so far as to mint his own currency, a privilege typically reserved for kings. Despite his success, he faced criticism for his dedication to literature, a pursuit deemed unworthy for someone of his noble stature.

There exists some ambiguity regarding his titles and names. In his literary works, he often referred to himself as 'Don Juan, son of infante don Manuel.' However, scholars from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries mistakenly labeled him as an infante, a title reserved for royal sons, which he did not hold. This confusion extends to his titles of Duke and Prince of Villena, which were conferred upon him by Alfonso IV and Pedro IV of Aragón. These titles, rooted in Aragonese nobility, held little significance for Juan Manuel, who chose not to use them in his writings or correspondence.
