Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado, born on October 28, 1968, is a prominent Honduran lawyer and politician who held the presidency of Honduras from 2014 to 2022. A member of the National Party, Hernández previously served as the president of the National Congress of Honduras from January 2010 until June 2013, when he shifted his focus to his presidential campaign.
In a controversial move, Hernández announced his intention to seek re-election in 2017, following a Supreme Court ruling in April 2015 that permitted such a bid. He won the National Party's primary elections on March 12, 2017, and was declared the winner of the general election held on November 26, 2017, albeit amid allegations of electoral fraud. Despite these claims, the United States recognized him as the legitimate victor.
After completing his presidential term, Hernández was sworn in as a member of the Central American Parliament on January 27, 2022. However, his legacy is marred by serious legal troubles; he was convicted of drug trafficking in the United States and sentenced to forty-five years in prison, although he was later pardoned by President Donald Trump.
Hernández's political career took a dramatic turn when, on July 1, 2021, the U.S. Department of State revoked his visa due to allegations of corruption and drug trafficking. Following a request for extradition from the U.S. government, he surrendered to authorities on February 15, 2022, and was extradited on April 21 of the same year. His conviction on three counts of drug trafficking and weapons conspiracy came on March 8, 2024, leading to a lengthy prison sentence.
