Juan Sebastián Elcano

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Juan Sebastián Elcano

Juan Sebastián Elcano, born on November thirtieth, fourteen seventy-six, was a prominent Spanish navigator and seafarer. He is best remembered for his remarkable achievement of completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth aboard the ship Victoria during the historic Magellan expedition to the Spice Islands. This monumental journey not only expanded the horizons of exploration but also solidified Elcano's place in maritime history.

In recognition of his extraordinary accomplishment, Charles I of Spain honored Elcano with a coat of arms featuring a globe and the Latin inscription 'Primus circumdedisti me,' which translates to 'You were the first to circumnavigate me.' This accolade underscored the significance of his voyage and the impact it had on global navigation.

Despite his notable successes, much about Elcano's personal life remains shrouded in mystery. The scarcity of original sources has led to considerable historiographical debate regarding his character and private affairs. It wasn't until the latter half of the nineteenth century that the first biographies emerged, following centuries of relative neglect by historians.

After his triumphant return, Elcano was entrusted by the king with another ambitious expedition to the Spice Islands, this time led by the nobleman García Jofre de Loaisa. Unfortunately, this venture did not reach completion. Tragically, Elcano met his end due to scurvy in the Pacific Ocean during this ill-fated expedition, marking a poignant conclusion to the life of a pioneering explorer.
