Juan Vicente Gómez

Juan Vicente Gómez, born on July twenty-fourth, eighteen fifty-seven, was a prominent Venezuelan military general and politician who became the de facto ruler of Venezuela from nineteen oh eight until his death in nineteen thirty-five. Although he officially served as president on three occasions, his true power lay in his role as an unelected military strongman, manipulating puppet governments to maintain control over the nation.

During his lengthy dictatorship, Gómez oversaw significant public works that transformed Venezuela's infrastructure. Notably, he commissioned the construction of the Transandean Highway, a remarkable route spanning one thousand five hundred thirty-nine kilometers, connecting Las Adjuntas station near Caracas to the main customs office in San Antonio del Táchira. This development, however, came at the cost of civil liberties, as Gómez prioritized state control over individual freedoms.

In addition to roadways, Gómez was instrumental in founding the country's first airline, Aeropostal Alas de Venezuela, and establishing the Venezuelan Air Force. He also initiated the construction of several airports, including Maracaibo International Airport, La Fría, and Juan Vicente Gómez International Airport, among others. These advancements laid the groundwork for modern aviation in Venezuela.

Gómez's regime was marked by a façade of constitutionalism and democracy, as he employed short-term puppet presidents like Victorino Márquez Bustillos and Juan Bautista Pérez. Through a series of constitutional amendments, he allowed these leaders to govern directly or indirectly, ensuring that his grip on power remained unchallenged while maintaining an appearance of legitimacy.
