Judith Cowan

Judith Elaine Cowan, born on September twenty-first, nineteen forty-three, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, was a distinguished Canadian academic, translator, and writer. She spent her formative years in Toronto, where she attended West Hill Collegiate Institute before pursuing higher education at the University of Toronto, York University, and the Université de Sherbrooke.

Her academic career flourished at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, where she taught English language literature. Cowan's passion for literature extended beyond teaching; she was an accomplished translator, known for her translations of poetry by Quebec authors into English for the magazine Ellipse, as well as translating various works by French authors.

In addition to her translation work, Cowan was a prolific writer. Her short stories graced the pages of several esteemed literary magazines, including Quarry, Queen's Quarterly, The Malahat Review, The Fiddlehead, and The Antigonish Review. Her translated works also found a home in notable publications such as L'Atelier du roman, Liberté, and XYZ.

Judith Cowan's life came to a close in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, on January fourteenth, twenty twenty-five, leaving behind a legacy of literary contributions that continue to inspire.
