Jugurtha

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Jugurtha

Jugurtha, born in the year one hundred sixty before Christ, was a prominent military leader and sovereign of Numidia, an ancient kingdom located in northwest Africa. His rise to power began after the death of King Micipsa, who had adopted him. Following Micipsa's passing in one hundred eighteen BC, Jugurtha found himself in a fierce competition for the throne against Micipsa's biological sons, Hiempsal and Adherbal.

In a calculated move, Jugurtha orchestrated the assassination of Hiempsal in one hundred seventeen BC, which ignited a civil war. Ultimately, he emerged victorious, defeating and killing Adherbal in one hundred twelve BC. This series of events not only solidified his rule but also drew the ire of Rome, which had vested interests in the region.

The death of Adherbal, executed against Rome's wishes, coupled with Jugurtha's adeptness at bribing Roman senators, led to widespread outrage in the Roman Republic. This tension culminated in the Jugurthine War, a conflict marked by numerous battles between Roman forces and Jugurtha's Numidian army.

Jugurtha's fortunes changed in one hundred five BC when he was captured and paraded through the streets of Rome as part of Gaius Marius' triumph. His final days were spent in the Tullianum prison, where he met his end by strangulation in one hundred four BC, marking a dramatic conclusion to his tumultuous life.
