Julia Maesa

Julia Maesa, born in Emesa, Syria, in the year one hundred sixty, was a formidable figure in the Severan dynasty of the Roman Empire. As the grandmother of emperors Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, she played a pivotal role in the political landscape of her time. Maesa was the elder sister of empress Julia Domna and the mother of Julia Soaemias and Julia Mamaea, both of whom contributed to the lineage of Roman emperors.

Coming from an Arab family of priests dedicated to the deity Elagabalus, Maesa was the daughter of Julius Bassianus. Her marriage to Julius Avitus, a man of consular rank, further solidified her status within the elite circles of Roman society. Through her sister's marriage to Septimius Severus, she became sister-in-law to the emperor and aunt to Caracalla and Geta, both of whom also ascended to the imperial throne.

After the tragic suicide of her sister, Julia Domna, Maesa sought to reclaim her family's influence. She was instrumental in the upbringing of her grandson Elagabalus, and following his assassination, she guided Severus Alexander to the throne. This strategic maneuvering helped restore the Severan dynasty to power after the tumultuous reign of Macrinus, who had usurped the throne following Caracalla's death.

Julia Maesa's influence as Augusta of the Empire lasted from two hundred eighteen until her death in Rome. Her legacy continued beyond her lifetime, as she was later deified in Syria alongside her sister, marking her enduring significance in Roman history.
