Julia Pastrana

Julia Pastrana was a remarkable circus performer and singer in the 19th century, known for her unique appearance due to a rare genetic condition called hypertrichosis terminalis. Born in 1834 in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, she captivated audiences with her extraordinary talent and presence.

As an Indigenous woman, Pastrana faced significant challenges throughout her life. Her condition resulted in her face and body being covered with straight black hair, and she had unusually large ears and nose. Additionally, she suffered from gingival hyperplasia, which caused her lips and gums to thicken, contributing to her distinctive look.
