Juliane Koepcke

Juliane Margaret Beate Koepcke, born on October 10, 1954, is a distinguished German-Peruvian mammalogist renowned for her expertise in bats. She is the daughter of esteemed zoologists Maria and Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke, which undoubtedly influenced her passion for the natural sciences.

Koepcke's life took a dramatic turn in 1971 when she became the sole survivor of the tragic LANSA Flight 508 crash. The aircraft was struck by lightning, leading to a harrowing fall of three thousand meters while she remained strapped to her seat. Despite sustaining severe injuries, including a concussion, a broken collarbone, and a torn knee ligament, her resilience shone through.

After the crash, Koepcke faced the daunting challenge of surviving alone in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest for eleven days. Her determination and survival skills ultimately led her to a lumberjack camp, where she found help and safety.
