She first gained prominence for her portrayal of Brenda Morgenstern, the younger sister of Valerie Harper's character in the beloved sitcom Rhoda. This role earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, marking the beginning of her illustrious career.

In nineteen eighty-seven, Kavner began voicing Marge Simpson on The Tracey Ullman Show, which featured animated shorts about a dysfunctional family.
