Julie Otsuka

In two thousand two, Otsuka made her literary debut with the novel When the Emperor was Divine, which poignantly addresses the Japanese-American internment camps during World War II. The narrative unfolds in California, her birthplace, and is inspired by her grandfather's arrest as a suspected spy for Japan immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
