Julien Baker is an American indie rock singer-songwriter and guitarist, known for her deeply confessional lyrical style and moody musical compositions. Born and raised in suburban Memphis, Tennessee, she began her musical journey while studying at Middle Tennessee State University, where she released her debut album, Sprained Ankle, in two thousand fifteen. The album garnered critical acclaim and secured a spot on several year-end lists, establishing Baker as a significant voice in the indie music scene.

Following her initial success, Baker signed with Matador Records and released her second studio album, Turn Out the Lights, in two thousand seventeen. This album further solidified her reputation, receiving widespread critical praise. Her third album, Little Oblivions, released in two thousand twenty-one, marked a new chapter in her career, showcasing a fuller band sound and achieving her first entry into the top forty of the Billboard 200 chart.

In addition to her solo endeavors, Baker is a member of the indie supergroup Boygenius, alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The trio released their debut eponymous EP in October two thousand eighteen and announced their reunion in January two thousand twenty-three, culminating in the release of their debut studio album, The Record, in March.
