Julien Offray de La Mettrie

Julien Offray de La Mettrie, born on December twelfth, seventeen oh nine, was a prominent French physician and philosopher who played a pivotal role in the development of Enlightenment thought. As one of the earliest French materialists, he challenged prevailing notions of the human condition and the nature of existence.

His most notable work, published in seventeen forty-seven, titled L'homme machine (Man a Machine), encapsulated his revolutionary ideas. La Mettrie argued that humans are complex animals, devoid of souls, akin to other creatures. This radical perspective positioned the mind as an integral part of the body, advocating for a life centered around the pursuit of pleasure, a philosophy known as hedonism.
