Julius Maada Bio, born on May twelfth, nineteen sixty-four, is a prominent Sierra Leonean politician and retired military officer. He has held the esteemed position of the fifth president of Sierra Leone since April fourth, two thousand eighteen. Prior to his presidency, Bio served as the military head of state for a brief period from January sixteenth to March twenty-ninth, nineteen ninety-six, at the young age of thirty-two, during a military junta known as the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC).
During his tenure as military head of state, Bio played a pivotal role in transitioning Sierra Leone back to a democratically elected government, handing over power to Ahmad Tejan Kabbah after Kabbah's victory in the nineteen ninety-six presidential election. Following his retirement from the military, Bio sought political asylum in the United States, where he remained until two thousand five, when he returned to Sierra Leone.
Bio's political journey continued as he ran as the presidential candidate for the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) in the two thousand twelve elections, though he was defeated by the incumbent president, Ernest Bai Koroma. However, he made a successful comeback in two thousand eighteen, defeating Samura Kamara of the ruling All People's Congress (APC).
As president, Bio has made significant changes, reversing many of Koroma's policies, which he criticized for corruption and mismanagement. His administration faced challenges, including a violent protest in August two thousand twenty-two over economic issues and a failed coup attempt in September two thousand twenty-three, which led to the detention of former president Koroma on treason charges. Despite these challenges, Bio was re-elected in the following year, although the elections raised concerns regarding transparency.
Under his leadership, Bio has implemented free primary and secondary public education and has taken steps to repeal the death penalty, marking a significant shift in Sierra Leone's governance.
