Julius Nepos

Julius Nepos, born in the year four hundred thirty, emerged as a significant figure in the waning days of the Western Roman Empire. Initially serving as the semi-autonomous governor of Dalmatia, he succeeded his uncle Marcellinus as the magister militum, or master of troops. His ascent to power began in earnest when he was granted command of an army by Eastern Emperor Leo I in December four hundred seventy-three, tasked with deposing Glycerius, the self-proclaimed emperor of Italy.

In the spring of four hundred seventy-four, Nepos landed in Italy and swiftly deposed Glycerius, claiming the title of Western Emperor on twenty-four June of that year. His coronation in Rome marked a significant moment, as he became the last emperor to be crowned in the city until Charlemagne centuries later. Despite his efforts to restore the prestige of the Western Empire, Nepos faced numerous challenges, including Visigothic incursions and internal strife.

His reign was marked by attempts to reassert imperial authority, particularly in Gaul, but the Western Empire's power was waning. In four hundred seventy-five, a revolt led by his magister militum Orestes forced Nepos to flee back to Dalmatia. Orestes subsequently proclaimed his young son, Romulus Augustulus, as emperor, further complicating Nepos's claim to the throne.

Even after losing control of Italy, Nepos maintained his claim to the Western Empire, receiving nominal recognition from the Eastern Empire. His efforts to regain power were thwarted by the rise of Odoacer, who deposed Romulus Augustulus in four hundred seventy-six. Despite his diminished status, Nepos continued to petition for assistance until his assassination in four hundred eighty, a tragic end for a ruler who is often regarded as the last legitimate emperor of the West.
