In nineteen eighty-one, Fashanu made history by becoming one of the first footballers to command a transfer fee of one million pounds when he moved from Norwich City to Nottingham Forest. After relocating to the United States, Fashanu faced serious legal troubles in nineteen ninety-eight when he was accused of sexual assault by a seventeen-year-old boy. A warrant for his arrest was issued, but he fled to England, fearing he would not receive a fair trial due to his sexuality. Tragically, in May nineteen ninety-eight, Fashanu took his own life in London, leaving behind a note that stated the encounter was consensual.
