Justin Huish

Justin Huish, born on January 9, 1975, is an American archer renowned for his remarkable achievements in the sport, particularly as a double Olympic champion at the 1996 Atlanta Games. His unique persona, characterized by wrap-around shades, a backwards baseball cap, a ponytail, and an earring, made him a captivating figure in the world of archery. Huish's journey to Olympic glory was nothing short of extraordinary, as he triumphed in both individual and team events, despite being ranked no higher than twenty-fourth in the world at the time.

In the individual event, Huish faced off against Sweden's Magnus Pettersson in a thrilling final, ultimately winning with a score of 112 to 107. His historic double gold medal achievement not only marked him as the first male archer to accomplish this feat but also significantly boosted the popularity of archery as a sport. This milestone was later matched by South Korean archers Ku Bon-chan in the 2016 Summer Olympics and Kim Woo-jin in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Huish's introduction to archery was unconventional; as a ninth-grader, he was more interested in skateboarding and initially found archery boring. However, when his parents opened Arrowsmith Archery, he sought a job there and began practicing at the age of fourteen. His dedication was evident as he honed his skills by shooting arrows through the front and back doors of his garage, aiming at a target in his backyard.

Within just three years of picking up a bow, Huish achieved significant victories, including winning the intermediate age division at the National Archery Association's Outdoor Target Championships at seventeen. He also made notable strides at the 1993 US collegiate championships and the 1995 US Target Championships, having only joined the US National Team in 1994. Although he qualified for the 2000 Summer Olympics, Huish ultimately withdrew later that year, leaving fans to wonder what further achievements he might have accomplished.
