Juvenal

Decimus Junius Juvenalis, commonly known as Juvenal, was a prominent Roman poet born around AD fifty-five. His literary contributions primarily consist of the Satires, a compelling collection of satirical poems that delve into various aspects of Roman life and society.

Although the specifics of Juvenal's life remain somewhat obscure, references within his works indicate that he began his writing career in the late first or early second century. Scholars suggest that his first book may have been published around one hundred or one hundred one AD, while his fifth and final surviving book is believed to have been completed after one hundred twenty-seven AD.

Juvenal's Satires, composed in the dactylic hexameter verse form, encompass at least sixteen poems that critique and reflect on Roman culture. His work follows in the tradition established by Lucilius, the pioneer of Roman satire, and aligns with the poetic legacies of Horace and Persius. Despite their comedic tone, the Satires serve as an essential resource for understanding ancient Rome from multiple perspectives.
