Beginning his illustrious career in nineteen sixty-four as a screenwriter, Balachander transitioned to directing with the film Neerkumizhi in nineteen sixty-five. Over a remarkable span of fifty years, he wrote or directed one hundred feature films, establishing himself as one of the most prolific filmmakers in India. His works are particularly noted for their strong female characters, often portraying women as central figures with complex personalities.

Throughout his career, Balachander received numerous accolades, including nine National Film Awards, fourteen Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, five Nandi Awards, and thirteen Filmfare Awards. His contributions to cinema were recognized with the Padma Shri in nineteen eighty-seven, followed by the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in two thousand ten, solidifying his legacy in Indian film history.

In addition to his directorial ventures, Balachander founded Kavithalaya Productions, under which he produced many of his films.
