Kakuei Tanaka

Kakuei Tanaka, born on May 4, 1918, in Niigata Prefecture, emerged from humble beginnings as the son of a poor farmer. Leaving school at the tender age of fourteen, he pursued an engineering education and established his own construction company in 1936. His entrepreneurial spirit flourished during the Pacific War, where he capitalized on government contracts, amassing considerable wealth.

Tanaka's political career began in earnest when he was elected to Japan's National Diet in 1947. He became a founding member of the Liberal Democratic Party in 1955 and held various cabinet positions, including Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minister of Finance, and Minister of International Trade and Industry. His adept political maneuvering and financial influence allowed him to build a significant faction within the party.
