Kalhana

Kalhana was a distinguished poet, writer, and historian, renowned for his seminal work, the Rajatarangini, which translates to 'River of Kings.' This remarkable text serves as a comprehensive account of the history of Kashmir, showcasing Kalhana's profound understanding of the region's past.

Composed in Sanskrit between the years one thousand one hundred forty-eight and one thousand one hundred forty-nine, the Rajatarangini stands out as a pioneering literary achievement. It is notable for its developed sense of chronology and place, a rarity in native Indian literature prior to the thirteenth century, as highlighted by scholar Robin Donkin.

Much of what is known about Kalhana's life is derived from his own writings, making him a unique figure in the historical narrative of Kashmir. His contributions have been extensively studied by scholars, including the eminent Mark Aurel Stein, who recognized the significance of Kalhana's work in the context of Indian historiography.
