Kalle Lasn

Kalle Lasn, born on March 24, 1942, is an influential Estonian-Canadian filmmaker, author, and activist. His early life was marked by upheaval; as World War II drew to a close, his family fled Estonia, spending time in a German refugee camp before resettling in Australia. Growing up in Canberra, Lasn developed a keen interest in storytelling and media, which would later shape his career.

In the late 1960s, Lasn ventured into the world of business by founding a market research company in Tokyo. His journey took a significant turn in 1970 when he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Over the next two decades, he produced a series of impactful documentaries for PBS and Canada’s National Film Board, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the film industry.

Lasn is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Adbusters magazine, a publication that critiques consumer culture and promotes social change. His epiphany regarding the pitfalls of consumerism occurred in a supermarket parking lot, leading him to create the concept of 'culture jam.' This idea, which he first enacted by sabotaging a shopping cart machine, embodies his commitment to challenging mainstream societal norms.

In addition to his work with Adbusters, Lasn has authored several influential books, including 'Culture Jam' and 'Design Anarchy.' He continues to reside in Vancouver, where he remains an active voice in the fight against consumerism and advocates for a more conscious society.
