Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was a pioneering American astronaut and aerospace engineer, celebrated as the first woman of Indian origin to venture into space. Born on March 17, 1962, she developed a passion for aerospace engineering early in her life, pursuing her education at Dayal Singh College and Punjab Engineering College in India. Her journey took her to the United States, where she earned both her Master of Science and Doctorate degrees, ultimately becoming a naturalized citizen in the early 1990s.

Chawla's first spaceflight occurred in 1997 aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia during the STS-87 mission, where she served as a mission specialist and robotic arm operator. This mission was not without its challenges, as it included a controversial incident involving the failed deployment of the Shuttle-Pointed Autonomous Research Tool for Astronomy, known as Spartan.

Tragically, her second flight in 2003 on STS-107 marked the final mission of Columbia. Kalpana was among the seven crew members who lost their lives when the shuttle disintegrated during reentry into Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003. Her legacy endures through numerous posthumous honors, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Space Flight Medal, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.

In recognition of her contributions to space exploration, several buildings, spacecraft, and even extraterrestrial landmarks have been named in her honor, ensuring that her remarkable journey and achievements continue to inspire future generations.
