Kang Soo-yeon

Kang Soo-yeon, born on August eighteenth, nineteen sixty-six, was a prominent South Korean actress whose career spanned from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. Often referred to as Korea's 'first world star,' she gained national fame as a child actress, particularly with her role in A High School Student's Diary on KBS 1TV from nineteen eighty-three to nineteen eighty-four. Her early work in comedy films such as Whale Hunting 2 in nineteen eighty-five and Mimi and Cheolsu's Youth Sketch in nineteen eighty-seven further solidified her status in the industry.

However, it was her breakout performance in Im Kwon-taek's The Surrogate Woman in nineteen eighty-seven that catapulted her to international acclaim. This role earned her the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the forty-fourth Venice International Film Festival, marking her as the first Korean actor to receive an award at a major international film festival. In nineteen eighty-nine, she continued to build her reputation by winning the Bronze St. George award at the sixteenth Moscow International Film Festival for her role in Come Come Come Upward, further establishing her title as a 'world star.'

As the new millennium approached, Kang's film appearances became less frequent, and she transitioned to television, where she found moderate success with the series Ladies of the Palace on SBS TV from two thousand one to two thousand two. Her last film released during her lifetime was Juri in two thousand thirteen. After a significant hiatus, she was poised to return to the big screen with the Netflix original Jung_E, directed by Yeon Sang-ho, which completed filming in January twenty twenty-two but was released posthumously following her untimely death.

Kang's life took a tragic turn when she collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage at her home in southern Seoul on May fifth, twenty twenty-two. Despite being rushed to the hospital and placed in the ICU, she never regained consciousness and passed away on May seventh, twenty twenty-two, leaving behind a legacy as one of South Korea's most beloved actresses.
