Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Kanishka

Kanishka, a prominent monarch of the Kushan Empire, is celebrated for his remarkable military, political, and spiritual contributions. As a descendant of Kujula Kadphises, the founder of the empire, Kanishka presided over a vast territory that stretched from Central Asia and Gandhara to Pataliputra on the Gangetic plain. His reign marked a significant period in history, with Puruṣapura, present-day Peshawar, serving as the main capital, alongside another major center in Mathura.

Under Kanishka's rule, the empire reached its zenith, becoming a hub for cultural and economic exchange. His patronage of Buddhism played a crucial role in the development of the Silk Road, facilitating the transmission of Mahayana Buddhism from Gandhara to China. Although he never converted to Buddhism himself, his support for the religion significantly influenced its spread across the region.

In a notable administrative reform around one hundred twenty-seven CE, Kanishka replaced Greek with Bactrian as the official language of his empire, reflecting the cultural shifts of the time. Earlier scholars believed he ascended the throne in seventy-eight CE, marking the beginning of the Saka calendar era; however, contemporary historians suggest that he actually came to power in one hundred twenty-seven CE.
